The system would be placed under a single new command based in Germany that would be led by a high-ranking U.S. general.

According to journalists, the plan to create this unit has already been submitted to the US Secretary of Defense and the final decision will probably be made in the coming weeks.

Sources of the American publication noted that the White House and the Pentagon favored the approach.

The creation of a new command and the Pentagon’s commitment to provide Ukraine with more than $16 billion in military aid signals that the United States expects the threat from Russia to Ukraine and its neighbors to persist for many years, current and former senior U.S. officials said.

The new command would carry out the decisions made by the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (the so-called Ramstein format), that the Defense Department created after the Russian invasion to address Ukraine’s needs and requests.

As previously reported, the US is to name the military mission supporting Ukraine. The naming of the mission is significant bureaucratically.

The naming of the operation formally recognizes the US effort within the military, akin to how the Pentagon dubbed the missions in Iraq and Afghanistan Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

After the implementation of such a decision, the USA will be able to allocate long-term dedicated funding to Ukraine. It will also provide an opportunity to set pay and bonuses for servicemen participating in training and military support missions for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
