On Ukraine’s Independence Day, the European Commission approved €6.1 billion to reinforce Ukraine’s air and missile defence, part of the EU’s €90 billion loan programme for missiles, ammunition and radars, as European leaders met in Kyiv for a “Coalition of the Willing” session to coordinate further support ahead of winter. The same week, two new grant tracks opened on the Ukraine-EU defence-tech side, one of them the first call open jointly to companies from Ukraine and an EU member state. Here is what’s open right now for Ukrainian defence and dual-use teams.

1. BraveTech EU – DefTech Forges: five tech challenges, grants up to €750,000

Deadline: 6 September 2026

Europe’s flagship defence-tech grant programme, funded by the European Commission with Brave1 and the European Defence Agency, is running its DefTech Forges round: five challenge areas – guided missile and UAV targeting systems, autonomous strike UAVs and swarm coordination, modular UAV platforms, detection and sensor systems, and electronic-warfare-resistant UAV platforms. Winners receive €120,000, with a path to up to €750,000 in follow-on funding through EDA testing. Open to both Ukrainian manufacturers and EU-based companies at TRL4+ with a field-ready prototype; 40 finalists will be tested on-site in November 2026, with six overall winners.

2. BRAVE FRANCE: €20 million joint Ukraine-France grant track

First competitions launch: September 2026

A new bilateral programme between Brave1 and France’s Defence Innovation Agency (AID), €10 million funded by each side, with individual grants capped at €1 million per joint Ukrainian-French project. Focus areas: unmanned systems, missile technologies and counter-air capabilities, with battlefield testing through Ukraine’s “Test in Ukraine” platform. A template worth watching for teams looking at other EU bilateral tracks.

3. Reminder – European Defence Fund 2026 closes in five weeks

Deadline: 29 September 2026

The €1 billion, 26-call EDF 2026 round covered in our first issue is closing soon. Ukrainian companies, now full beneficiaries under the EU’s new associate status, can still join consortia (partners typically needed from at least three EU/associated countries) across air and missile defence, quantum-secured networks, AI and situational awareness, GNSS resilience and spectrum superiority.

FROM INTEGRASYS – CleanRF: automatic protection for critical communications against interference
