In May, Ukrainian interceptor drones shot down over 3,500 Russian drones of various types across three layers of air defense.

Oleksandr Syrskyi, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, announced this, noting that such results were achieved thanks to the systematic development and strengthening of Ukraine’s small-scale air defense systems.

“Today, most of the Russian Shaheds, Gerans, and other aerial attack drones being neutralized are being brought down by our interceptor drones,” the Commander-in-Chief reported.

According to him, the highest success rate has been achieved by the second layer of air defense, which the Unmanned Systems Forces operate. They accounted for more than 1,200 enemy drones shot down last month.

Work is currently underway to establish a fourth layer of air defense, which will cover two additional regions. The number of interceptor drone crews is also being increased, and personnel training continues.

Army aviation is also actively involved in shooting down Russian Shaheds and other drones: in May, Ukrainian helicopters destroyed over 440 such targets.

To perform air defense missions, helicopters are being equipped with modern detection and targeting systems, and their arsenal is being expanded with new missiles, which, according to Syrskyi, are already showing good results.

He also stressed that the Russians are constantly adapting, changing their drone tactics, and increasing both the number and sophistication of their UAVs.

Specifically, Russia plans to make missile-equipped drones account for 50% of its attacks, creating new challenges for Ukraine that require rapid responses.

In May, Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said that Ukraine has developed low-cost interceptor missiles designed to take down Russian Shahed drones. Testing of these missiles is currently underway.
