Amid Tensions with Serbia, Kosovo to Deploy Shahed-Like Strike Drones

Kosovo’s security forces will be equipped with domestically developed strike drones capable of engaging targets at ranges exceeding 1,000 kilometers.

The announcement was made by Kosovo-based drone manufacturer Ridvan Aliu, who said the security forces have already placed an order for the SKIFTERI K1 unmanned aerial vehicles.

“Kosovo is prepared to conduct long-range air strikes at distances of more than 1,000 kilometers. The SKIFTERI K1 has been tested by one of our clients and demonstrated a high level of accuracy,” Aliu stated.

The SKIFTERI K1 features a flying-wing design and can carry a payload of up to 42 kilograms.

According to the manufacturer, the drone can remain airborne for up to seven hours and cover a distance of up to 1,124 kilometers.

Overall, Ridvan Aliu announced the launch of production of four different types of unmanned aerial vehicles in Kosovo.

Production began with the manufacture of smaller FPV drones, while larger models are currently still under development.

Against the backdrop of Kosovo’s expanding defense capabilities, the country is preparing for a potential escalation of tensions with Serbia.

The conflict between Kosovo and Serbia dates back to the 20th century and is rooted in national, ethnic, and religious disputes. Serbia considers Kosovo to be its historical territory, while the majority of Kosovo’s population is ethnic Albanian.

In 1998–1999, armed confrontation between Serbian forces and Albanian insurgents led to NATO intervention and Kosovo’s effective removal from Serbian control.

In 2008, Kosovo declared independence, which Serbia does not recognize, and tensions between the two sides persist to this day. Ukraine also does not recognize Kosovo’s independence.
