US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) has awarded UK-based Kraken a $49 million contract to develop prototype surface and underwater drones.

The company will build reduced-signature platforms using new materials and a modular payload architecture, The Defense Post reported.

The systems are intended to strengthen US reconnaissance, surveillance, and other coastal operations.

Kraken states that demand is growing for maneuverable and survivable maritime drones. The company has already participated in SOCOM innovation programs with Norway and the UK.

Kraken is also demonstrating its K3 Scout drone, which passed NATO TF-X tests in the Baltic Sea.

These platforms are designed to support the US armed forces with intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), maintain readiness, and enable operations in challenging coastal environments.

The company is also expanding its presence in Europe through a joint venture with Germany’s NVL Group to produce maritime drones.

Recently, it was reported that Ukraine and Greece will jointly produce maritime drones.
