Moldova has signed a security and defense partnership agreement with the United Kingdom.

This was reported on Wednesday, November 20, on the British government’s website.

The signing took place during the visit of the British and Romanian foreign ministers to Chisinau.

The agreement aims to expand cooperation between the two countries and strengthen Moldova’s resilience to external threats.

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy noted the significant influx of Ukrainian refugees into Moldova after Russia’s invasion in February 2022.

“With Ukraine next door, Moldovans are constantly reminded of Russia’s oppression, imperialism, and aggression,” the Minister stated.

According to the UK statement, this partnership with Moldova will also strengthen support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, security, and stability and contribute to strengthening national security at home in the face of increasing Russian aggression.

Within the cooperation, a readmission agreement was also signed, which will ensure the return of Moldovan citizens illegally staying in the UK.

In addition, London will provide £2 million to improve Moldova’s defense against cyberattacks and 5 million pounds to strengthen the healthcare system to help refugees.

Moldova signed a security partnership agreement with the European Union in May of this year.

This partnership intends to strengthen the country’s resilience and allow it to respond to security challenges together with the EU.

In August, Germany reinforced the Moldovan border police with Ukrainian-made FurSeal 485 boats. And Lithuania handed over a batch of thermal imaging sights to the Moldovan army as part of its security assistance.
