Lithuania plans to receive the German brigade two years sooner than planned – in mid-2025, not in 2027.
This was announced by Laurynas Kasčiūnas, Chair of the National Security and Defence Committee, as Yevropeiska Pravda reported with reference to BNS.
“I can say for sure that there is already a plan for the middle of 2025,” Kasčiūnas said.
Arvydas Anušauskas, Lithuanian Defense Minister stated that the deployment of the German brigade will require the construction of both storage facilities for weapons and infrastructure to accommodate troops. This would include Panevezys, the area near Klaipeda, Suvalkija, and the Rudninkai ridge.
It is noted that the German-led multinational NATO battalion has been stationed in Lithuania since 2017, but at the June summit in Madrid, countries of the Alliance agreed to upgrade it to the brigade level.
This would increase the number of allied troops in Lithuania several times.
Most of the brigade members will be stationed in Germany, at least for the time being. Because of the existing lack of infrastructure to host and train troops.
Among other things, Lithuania started building a new military training area in Rudninkai earlier this year. It had also announced plans to develop campsites elsewhere in the country.
Approximately EUR 350 million could be needed for all the infrastructure improvement works.
As previously reported, during the NATO summit in Madrid, US President Joe Biden told how the United States to increase its presence in Europe.
He announced that the United States will establish a new permanent army headquarters in Poland. Also, the new U.S. warships will be dispatched to Spain, fighter jet squadrons to Great Britain, and ground troops to Romania.
Air defense units will also be deployed in Germany and Italy. In addition, a wide range of assets will be introduced to strengthen the security of the Baltic States.
