In Ukraine, four different chassis are being used for the Bohdana artillery system to increase the production rate of self-propelled artillery systems.
Vladyslav Belbas, CEO of Ukrainian Armor, shared this with Militarnyi.
Ukrainian Armor specializes in the production of Tatra chassis for these wheeled howitzers.
The company receives Tatra trucks, after which the cab and internal elements are completely dismantled and an armored capsule is installed.
After that, the chassis are sent to the Bohdana self-propelled gun assembly plant, where a 155-mm artillery unit is mounted. Last year, Ukraine produced 40 Bohdana artillery systems per month.
“Our manufacturer of Bohdana self-propelled guns has scaled up production to such an extent that the bottleneck has become the supply of chassis, not artillery systems,” Belbas noted.
Accordingly, the artillery system is currently being produced on four different chassis simultaneously to meet the needs of the Ukrainian army.
The CEO emphasized that the chassis of Ukrainian self-propelled guns withstand combat conditions well.
The first installations were based on the KrAZ-6322, then the MAZ-6317 chassis was used, and later they switched to the Tatra T815-7.
In 2024, it was announced that self-propelled guns are also being produced on the basis of the Czech Tatra Phoenix 8×8 truck. In addition to the Tatra chassis, Mercedes-Benz Zetros chassis are also supplied for Bohdana.
“I like the Tatra Phoenix the most in terms of technical parameters,” Vladyslav Belbas shared his opinion on the best chassis.
Last year, the Kramatorsk Heavy Machine Building Plant registered an international patent for the 2S22 Bohdana self-propelled artillery system on a completely new chassis.
