The Bundeswehr is preparing to receive around 1,000 wounded soldiers per day amid the growing threat of a NATO war with Russia.

Reuters reported on this.

Moscow denies preparing for a conflict with the Alliance, but a series of airspace violations by Russian aircraft and drones over NATO countries has heightened concerns about a possible escalation.

Germany’s Surgeon General Ralf Hoffmann explained that the number of wounded would depend on the intensity of the fighting and the composition of the units involved.

“Realistically, we are talking about a figure of around 1,000 wounded troops per day,” he told Reuters in an interview with Reuters.

European militaries, including their medical services, stepped up preparations for potential conflict with Moscow in the wake of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Europe’s biggest conflict since World War II.

Hoffmann emphasized that Germany is continually updating its medical training, incorporating the critical lessons learned from the war in Ukraine.

“The nature of warfare has changed dramatically in Ukraine,” Hoffmann said, citing a shift from gunshot injuries to blast wounds and burns caused by drones and loitering munitions.

Hoffman emphasized the importance of providing long-term stabilization for the wounded directly on or near the front line, citing the experience of the Ukrainian military.

He also noted the need for flexible transportation options, recalling that Ukraine had already used medical trains and buses.

The wounded would undergo initial treatment at the frontline, before being transported back to Germany for care predominantly in civilian hospitals, Hoffmann added.

He estimated a need for approximately 15,000 hospital beds from German hospitals’ total capacity of up to 440,000.
