German Foreign Minister: China’s Aggression in South China Sea Poses Threat to Europe

The German Foreign Minister stated that China’s aggressive policy in the South China Sea and rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait posed threats to international security, which also affected Europe.

Johann Wadephul made this statement during a visit to Indonesia on Wednesday, August 20th, according to Reuters.

“China’s growing military aggressiveness in the South China Sea not only threatens Asia’s security but also undermines the rules-based international order as a whole,” he said.

The German Foreign Minister added that, as a result, key trade routes would also be put at risk.

Wadephul also commented on the issue of the Taiwan Strait.

“Any escalation of the situation will have serious consequences for global security and prosperity, and will directly affect the interests of Germany and Europe,” the minister added.

In July, Militarnyi reported that China had established a network of 26 military bases in the South China Sea, having covered a total area of around 3,200 hectares.

Among them are airfields capable of accommodating nuclear-capable bombers.

In addition to China, other countries in the region, including Vietnam, have also stepped up the construction of bases.

However, Beijing holds a significant advantage in infrastructure, scale, and strategic planning, allowing it to effectively turn the South China Sea into a ‘Chinese lake.’

Documents leaked by the hacker group BlackMoon revealed that Russia is cooperating with China in the development of an automated command and control system for amphibious operations, codenamed ‘Sword’ (R&D project Sword).

The development of this system may be linked to preparations for potential operations against Taiwan, where naval and airborne assaults would play a key role.
