The Ukrainian military uses American M864 cluster artillery shells against Russian infantry.
This was reported by analysts from Ukraine Weapons Tracker, who showed a photo of these shells in Ukraine.
Some of the most massive 155mm shells in their class, the M864, entered service with U.S. artillery in 1987.
In fact, it was a deeply modernized version of the M483 projectile with increased range and a reduced load.
The M864 is a projectile with a caliber of 155mm, a length of about 900 mm, and a weight of 47 kg. The main bulk of the hull is intended for submunitions.
A separate charge controlled by the fuze undermines the cluster. The tail of the charge is allocated for a gas generator that improves aerodynamics and range. When using artillery mounts with a standard-length barrel, the range reaches 30 kilometers.
72 bomblets of the M864 are placed in the projectile. These are 48 small M42 HEAT-Frag bomblets and 24 larger M46s. During detonation, bomblets of both types scatter debris within a radius of several meters and can penetrate at least 60–65 mm of armor.
The Ukrainian Defense Minister, Oleksii Reznikov, stated he would share with the United States a report on the use of cluster munitions in Ukraine this week.
Ukraine will notify the Pentagon about the consequences of the use of cluster ammunition.
“I hope that they will be more effective than conventional ammunition,” Reznikov said.
Reporting is part of the agreement under which Ukraine received cluster ammunition from the United States, the head of the Ministry of Defense noted.
Recall that the so-called “war correspondent” Rostislav Zhuravlev from the Russian propaganda agency RIA Novosti was eliminated due to the cluster munitions in the Zaporizhzhia region recently.
