The German government will transfer 18 Leopard 2A6 tanks to Ukraine instead of the previously promised 14 ones.
This was stated by Boris Pistorius, German Defense Minister.
These vehicles, together with others sent to Ukraine by Portugal and Sweden, will form a battalion armed with Leopard 2A6 tanks.
Earlier, on January 25, the government agreed to transfer to Ukraine a Leopard 2 tank company and agreed to re-export these tanks from other countries.
Tanks should come from the Bundeswehr reserves. Germany will also provide logistics and ammunition for these vehicles.
In addition to the 18 Leopard 2A6 tanks that Germany has pledged to provide, three more units of the same modification are promised by Portugal. Sweden will transfer 10 Stridsvagn 122 tanks.
Leopard 2A4 tanks are also to be transferred by: Spain – 10 units, Canada – 4 units, Poland – 14 units, and Norway – 8 units.
In addition, Finland will provide Ukraine with three heavy demining vehicles Leopard 2R and spare parts, and the Netherlands will transfer ammunition to tanks.
In total, under the initiative of the Polish government, the “tank coalition” managed to gather 67 tanks and three engineering vehicles on its basis, which can be conditionally divided into two tank battalions.
Also, at tank ranges in Poland, Spain, and Germany, NATO instructors are preparing Ukrainian tank crews and technical personnel, from which field repair units will be formed.
