The Bundeswehr will start training Ukrainian crews to use Leopard 2 tanks next week.
Spiegel journalists reported this.
Over the past few days, the first groups of Ukrainian military personnel have arrived from Poland to Germany with equipment.
The training will take place at the Münster training ground in Lower Saxony, where Ukrainian units are already training to use the Marder infantry fighting vehicles.
It is noted that the Bundeswehr is planning a special express course for the Ukrainian military. The publication emphasizes that part of the soldiers arrived for training directly from the front line in the Bakhmut area.
In 6 to 8 weeks, the crews must learn the basics of managing the weapons system and the interaction of the Leopard 2 battle tanks and the Marder infantry fighting vehicles.
It is emphasized that it is possible to learn only the basics of equipment management in such a short time. The training usually takes several years.
The military will return to Ukraine together with the equipment by the end of March.
As previously reported, on January 25, the German government agreed to the transfer of 14 Leopard 2A6 tanks.
Ukraine is also waiting to receive Leopard 1 tanks. The first batch of this equipment should arrive by the summer of 2023.
