The Armed Forces of Ukraine received 155-mm FH70 towed howitzers.

This was reported by the General Staff of the Armed Forces.

Howitzers were already transferred to combat as part of the Ukrainian artillery units and are working against Russian invaders.

The military demonstrated the work of the Ukrainian gunners equipped with the new howitzers. Most likely, towed howitzers were transferred to Ukraine from Italy.

The General Staff noted that 155-mm FH70 howitzers are already destroying the enemy at the frontline.

With reference to its own sources, local media was previously reporting that Ukraine will receive the FH70 howitzers from Italy. The howitzers were part of the new – third – military aid package from this country.

FH70 is a towed howitzer developed by the United Kingdom and Germany in 1969. Later, Italy joined the list of manufacturers. The project was intended to replace the American M114 155-mm howitzer. In 1976, the howitzer was adopted into service.

The howitzer consists of several parts: the artillery part itself, a hydraulic recoil mechanism, and a shell charging mechanism.

The FH70 is equipped with the 1700 cc Volkswagen engine which powers the hydraulics and assists in bringing the gun in and out of action and moving the gun for up to 20 km at low speed without having it towed by an artillery tractor.

The semi-automatic loading system operates at any angle of the gun barrel lift and consists of a loading tray that supplies the projectile to the breechloader.

According to the Ukrainian military, thanks to the semi-automatic shell loader, the trained crew can make up to six shots per minute, almost one every ten seconds.

FH70 weighs eight to nine tons and has a maximum range of 24-30 km depending on the type of artillery shells. A crew consists of eight people. This howitzer is in service with the military of Germany, Italy, Great Britain, Japan, Estonia, Norway, the Netherlands, and several other countries.
