Spain to Purchase Over 200 Self-Propelled Artillery Systems

Spain’s Armed Forces plan to purchase 214 new self-propelled artillery systems, including 128 tracked and 86 wheeled units, according to the Future Army media.

The rearmament program is divided into two phases. The first includes the purchase of 128 tracked systems for €1.82 billion. These will be deployed with the army and marines. The package also covers 59 support vehicles for ammunition transport, command posts, and other auxiliary roles, built on the same chassis.

The tracked systems will be based on the ASCOD infantry fighting vehicle platform already in use with the Spanish army.

A prototype, named Nemesis, was presented at the 2025 Future Artillery Conference in May.

The second phase envisions acquiring 86 wheeled self-propelled howitzers on 8×8 or 10×10 chassis for €1.18 billion. This will include 107 support vehicles and training equipment.

The updated procurement plan is more ambitious than the previous version, which called for 145 units: 109 tracked and 36 wheeled.

Nemesis

General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) and KNDS Deutschland jointly developed the Nemesis system. It features a fully automated AGM artillery module similar to the one used on the RCH155 system and offers a firing range of up to 54 km.

Its 360-degree turret rotation and broad elevation range allow it to engage targets without additional support systems.

The ASCOD platform is powered by a 1,100-horsepower diesel engine and can be fitted with either steel or composite rubber tracks.

Nemesis is operated by a crew of two, with the option to accommodate a third member in an ergonomically optimized cabin. GDELS notes that the system can also be operated autonomously and was developed entirely in Europe, supporting the EU’s goal of strategic defense autonomy.
