In 2024, Ukrainian industry increased the production of cruise missiles eightfold. This surge in production ensured the regular use of domestic ballistic missiles and the long-range Neptune missile system.

This information was revealed during the “UKRAINIAN WEAPONS 2024” briefing, attended by the Militarnyi’s correspondent.

According to the Minister of Strategic Industries of Ukraine, Herman Smetanin, many new missile models were introduced in 2024. Among these, a new class of missile, the drone missile, emerged. The introduction of new products allowed for an eightfold increase in production volume compared to 2023.

In November 2024, it was reported that the Ukrainian military-industrial complex had produced over a hundred units of missile weapons during the year.

Among the new missile systems, the minister mentioned the already-known “Palyanytsia,” “Peklo,” “Ruta,” and the previously undisclosed “Bars” missile.

In addition, in response to a journalist’s question regarding the long-range Neptune and domestic ballistic missiles, Smetanin confirmed, “We actively use it every month, as well as ballistic missiles.”

Ukrainian missiles

In November 2024, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine plans to produce 3,000 cruise missiles and drone missiles in 2025 to enhance the Defense Forces’ strike capabilities.

Minister of Defense Rustem Umerov announced the successful scaling up of serial production for the Neptune missiles. According to him, the production of Ukrainian missiles continues to increase.

He emphasized, “The serial production of R-360 Neptune cruise missiles, with improvements to target longer distances, has been successfully scaled up.”

In March 2025, President Zelensky further disclosed that the range of the Neptune cruise missile had been increased, enabling it to strike targets at distances of up to 1,000 kilometers.

The successful test of a Ukrainian ballistic missile was also reported in August 2024.

“There was a positive test of the first Ukrainian ballistic missile,” the president stated during the “Ukraine 2024. Independence” forum.

Although technical details about the Ukrainian ballistic missile are scarce, it is believed to be a continuation of the OTRK “Sapsan/Hrim-2” project. For more on the history of Ukrainian operational-tactical missile systems, refer to our special feature.
