The South Korean government plans to reconsider the ban on the supply of lethal weapons to Ukraine.

Yonhap News published the relevant information.

Following the signing of a strategic partnership agreement between Russia and the DPRK, which also includes military assistance to each other in the event of aggression, the South Korean government urgently began considering lifting the ban on arms supplies to Ukraine.

“The government clearly emphasizes that any cooperation that directly or indirectly helps North Korea increase its military power is a violation of UN Security Council resolutions and is subject to monitoring and sanctions by the international community,” Jang Ho-jin, director of the National Security Office of the Presidential Office, said.

According to government officials, the issue of open assistance to Ukraine and the transfer of lethal weapons to it has now been raised. This step should be taken because of the DPRK’s similar support for Russia in this war.

“We plan to reconsider the issue of arms support for Ukraine,” the Korean government said.

The President has to review the arms export permit, but most government officials are currently inclined to support the transfer of necessary military equipment to Ukraine.

In addition, the government plans to increase the number of goods that will be banned from export to Russia, including heavy industry products.

Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, South Korea has not transferred military equipment and machinery to Ukraine.

The country provided only humanitarian aid and handed over dry rations, first aid kits, clothing, etc. to the military.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol confirmed his position on the ban on arms transfers to Ukraine on May 9, 2024.

In the near future, the country’s President will make an official statement on the revision of the ban and announce the final decision.
