Greece will hand over approximately 20 or 30 units of the BMP-1s to Ukraine.

This was stated by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in his interview with ERT.

He stressed that in this way, Greece will replace its fleet of armored vehicles with more modern samples from Germany.

“Now we are exchanging a small amount, from 20 to 30 BMP-1s, for much more modern German-made vehicles. We are helping Ukraine and at the same time strengthening our armed forces with the newer combat vehicles,” Mitsotakis said.

This regards the German Marder IFVs. In exchange for this equipment, Greece agreed to hand over its BMP-1s to Ukraine.

The amount of equipment that a country can transfer to Ukraine should be equivalent to what it will be receiving from Germany.

Previously, the Greek authorities announced the transfer of 100 units of BMP to Ukraine but stressed that it will depend on the number of vehicles they will receive as a replacement.

It was previously reported that Greece is equipped with the BMP-1s that were previously used by the army of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and after the unification of Germany, the Bundeswehr no longer needed them.

All vehicles were of Czechoslovak production and were retrofitted. They received the BMP-1A1 Ost index.

In the 1990s, Greece received approximately 500 such infantry fighting vehicles. Some of them were handed over to Egypt, and a part to Iraq.
