Germany will increase ammunition production to continue military support for Ukraine.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced this, CNN reports.
The capacity to repair weapons and military equipment used by Ukrainian forces will also be increased.
“The now one-year lasting support of Ukraine has also brought us the knowledge that enables us to ensure that there is also a sufficient supply, with spare parts, that we have created repair capacities for the weapons used in the war, at locations outside of Ukraine,” Scholz said.
“We will ensure that the production of ammunition is advanced, both for the weapons that we have supplied ourselves and those that come from classic stocks that are available in eastern Europe,” the head of the German government added.
Last month, a joint meeting of Ukraine’s and Germany’s top defense industry companies took place.
The event was set up to discuss important issues of cooperation between defense industry companies of both countries.
In the second half of February, it was reported that the German defense company KMW (Krauss-Maffei Wegmann) started preparing Leopard 1A5 tanks to be delivered to Ukraine.
Previously, Oleksii Reznikov, Minister of Defense of Ukraine, shared that about 25 Leopard 1 tanks should arrive in Ukraine in spring.
In addition, the German government decided to transfer 18 Leopard 2A6 tanks to Ukraine instead of the previously promised 14 ones.
Tanks should come from the Bundeswehr reserves. Germany will also provide logistics and ammunition for these vehicles.
The Rheinmetall has started the production of hundreds of thousands of 35 mm ammunition, which are used in Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns, which Ukraine owns. Also, Rheinmetall is supplying Ukraine with automated reconnaissance systems at the behest of the German government.
