The unnamed country ordered RBS 70 NG MANPADS and Carl-Gustaf grenade launchers from Saab

The unnamed Western country ordered RBS 70 NG air defense systems and Giraffe 1X radar from the Swedish company Saab.

The order also included Carl Gustaf man-portable shoulder-fired recoilless rifles.

The signing of a framework agreement with the government of the customer country was reported on Saab’s website.

The order’s value is over 700 million dollars (approximately 8 billion SEK).

The delivery of the ordered weapons and equipment will last from 2023 to 2026.

“Due to the nature of the industry, the circumstances relating to the interests of the customer and national security, no further information will be provided regarding these orders or the customer,” Saab said in a statement.

The exact number of air defense systems and hand grenade launchers ordered was not reported.

RBS-70 is a Swedish-made portable short-range anti-aircraft missile system. Its missiles are guided by a laser beam system: its beam creates a corridor along which the missile flies. The system can be used to defeat air targets and lightly armored ground equipment.

Today, the key advantage of this system is the lack of electromagnetic equipment that could create obstacles in the system’s use. This ensures a higher hit probability and reduces the amount of time required for operator training on simulators.

The anti-aircraft system launcher consists of a pedestal, a sighting device, and its own transport and launch container (TLC) carrying the anti-aircraft missile.

Giraffe 1X radar is an aerial surveillance component for ground air defense. It transmits data on the detected air targets to SAM or MANPADS operators. The radar weighs only 150 kg. Therefore, it can be integrated into any type of mobile platform or fixed position.

Modern Carl Gustaf recoilless rifles in the M4 version are capable of firing a wide range of 84mm ammunition, including anti-tank, anti-personnel, and auxiliary shells. Ammunition has an effective firing range of up to 400m against tanks and 700m against buildings and fixed targets.
