Russia is trying to use rocket artillery to counter the M777 howitzers of the Ukrainian military.
Ukrainian artillery operators and volunteers report the Russians using Uragan multiple rocket launchers against the American-made howitzers.
The M777 towed howitzer with a 155 millimeters barrel and a 39 calibers length has a range of 24 kilometers when using the conventional shells.
In turn, the 220 mm BM-27 Uragan multiple rocket launcher has a range of 35 kilometers.
Recently, Ukrainian journalists visited a position equipped with M777 howitzers in the Kharkiv region.
After the Ukrainian artillery crew opened its fire, cluster munition from the Uragan multiple rocket launcher was arriving back at the M777 position.
“During the day, the Russians opened fire at this position three times. Both the journalists and defenders of Ukraine remained safe and sound,” said a Ukrainian journalist while being at the М777 position.
Ukrainian volunteer Roman Donik also shared that the M777 howitzer is a priority target for the Russian military.
“They are being hunted. If after a volley, they locate the howitzers with an Orlan drone, then in 2 minutes, the Uragan cluster munition is flying this way. The entire divisions of Uragan are on the hunt,” the volunteer said.
The Uragan multiple rocket launcher is designed to destroy manpower, lightly armored and armored vehicles of the enemy’s motorized infantry and tank units in their concentration areas and on the move. It is also used to destroy command posts, communication nodes, and objects of the military-industrial infrastructure, along with the remote installation of anti-tank mines fields in the combat zone at a distance of 10 to 35 km.
The Uragan multiple rocket launcher is armed with 9M27K cluster unguided missiles, which are designed to destroy personnel and armored vehicles.
The 9М27K projectile has a 9N128К cluster head with 9N210 fragmentation warheads.
