The United Kingdom will invest £2 billion (approximately $2.7 billion) in drone technology, informed by operational insights from the Russia-Ukraine war.
According to The Guardian, the investment is outlined in the British government’s newly released Strategic Defence Review.
The review prioritizes developing and procuring cost-effective loitering munitions (kamikaze drones), more advanced reusable drone systems, and establishing a dedicated Uncrewed Systems Hub. This hub aims to enhance knowledge sharing and improve coordination across the various branches of the armed forces.
Defence Secretary John Healey told MPs that the army would become “ten times more lethal” by integrating technologies such as drones and artificial intelligence, with heavy armour: tanks and artillery.”
The Strategic Defence Review highlights that drones have become “an essential component of land warfare,” and stresses the need for the army to invest in strike drones, reconnaissance UAVs, and counter-drone technologies.
The review notes that Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has demonstrated how drones have transformed the modern battlefield.
They have become critically important tools of warfare, estimated to be responsible for up to 70% of frontline casualties.
As a result, the UK government has decided to allocate £2 billion to this sector.
This forms part of a broader commitment to make the United Kingdom “battle-ready,” as Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated during a visit to the BAE Systems shipyard in Glasgow. He emphasized that the reform of the defence sector is a response to growing global security threats.
The Royal Navy may increase the number of destroyers and frigates from 14 to 25 vessels, helping to reverse years of reductions and strengthen maritime presence within NATO.
The UK government is also engaged in confidential negotiations with the Pentagon regarding the purchase of American fighter jets capable of carrying tactical nuclear weapons.
In addition, the United Kingdom is investing £1.5 billion in constructing at least six new factories to restore its artillery munitions production capacity.
