Three large unidentified drones were again spotted over Kleine-Brogel Air Base, which belongs to the Air Component of the Belgian Armed Forces – marking the second such incident over the weekend.
Reuters reported on this.
According to Belgium’s Ministry of Defence, the flight paths “clearly indicated targeted surveillance” of this particular base.
At the scene, the military used electronic warfare systems to jam the drone’s control signal, but this proved ineffective – the communication channel remained active. Meanwhile, police and a helicopter followed the drones but lost them a few kilometers from the base.
Kleine-Brogel is home to the 10th Tactical Wing of the Belgian Air Component, equipped with F-16AM/BM fighter jets, and hosts the U.S. Air Force’s 701st Munitions Support Squadron. Under NATO’s nuclear sharing program, the base stores B61-series nuclear bombs.
Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken confirmed that these were not ‘accidental flyovers’ but a targeted mission over a sensitive military base. The incident occurred for the second time in 24 hours. Authorities are conducting an investigation; earlier, swarms of drones had already been detected over other military areas in the country.
In late October and early November, Belgian authorities also investigated drone flights over another military base – Elsenborn – and issued a warning about the ban on flights over military zones.
