The South Korean company Hyundai Rotem has completed deliveries of a fourth batch of K1A2 main battle tanks to the Republic of Korea Armed Forces.

Janes reported on this with reference to the announcement of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) made on September 12, 2024.

The final batch of the K1A2 tanks was delivered to the South Korean Armed Forces and distributed among the tank units of the Marine Corps tank battalions.

The Marine Corps received four tanks, which has enhanced their capabilities by replacing M48A5 tanks.

According to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, the K1A2 tanks received modern electronics and satellite navigation systems.

“The K1A2 tank was sequentially deployed to the RoK Army and RoK Marine Corps. The tank is expected to increase combat efficiency, operator convenience, and safety through improved performance. Equipped with rear surveillance cameras, the real-time operational response capability of the tank has been strengthened,” DAPA stated.

The exact number of tanks that have been modernized is not reported, but at the beginning of 2022, the South Korean Armed Forces had about 35 K1A1 tanks that had to be upgraded to the A2 version.

The modernization of the fourth batch of tanks occurred between November 2021 and September 2024, while the modernization of the first batch began in 2013-2014.

As previously reported, on October 9, 2012, a new version of a modernized K1A1 tank was released. A tank received significant improvements to its electronic systems.

Front and rear surveillance cameras in the cab, a signal receiver for identifying friends and foes, displays for the commander and gunner, an improved cooling system, network connectivity, and GPS navigation were added.

Militarnyi previously reported that Poland disclosed the details of the production of localized K2 tanks and the nuances of their deep modification to the K2PL version.

During the presentation, representatives of the companies said that Hyundai Rotem plans to export 180 K2 tanks in an “intermediate version” by 2025 under the contract. At this time, Poland will be preparing facilities for the production of tanks and their further maintenance.

After 2025, the armored vehicle service center in Poland will modernize and upgrade the K2 tanks to the Polish version, K2PL, which will feature significant innovations and enhanced protection.
