Romania is enhancing security measures at its defense industry facilities following a fire at the Cugir Arms Factory, which produces small arms and ammunition.
Radu Miruță, Romania’s Minister of Economy, announced the new directives, as reported by European Truth.
He explained that he has reinstated the requirement for mandatory permission from the Ministry of Economy and security service clearance for access to defense enterprises and storage sites – a rule that had been lifted earlier this year in January 2025.
Additionally, Miruță has ordered an urgent review and update of all security plans for defense infrastructure, warehouses, and production areas to ensure heightened protection moving forward.
“If there is still any director (I hope not) who thinks that a factory producing ammunition or firearms can be managed like an ice cream shop, I suggest they take this opportunity to resign,” the Minister added.
The fire broke out during the night from Friday to Saturday in a workshop at the Cugir Arms Factory. Approximately 400,000 rounds of 14.5mm ammunition for heavy machine guns, worth €5 million and ready for shipment, were stored there.
The Romanian police have opened a criminal investigation into the explosion that caused the fire, and authorities have not ruled out sabotage.
