The European HYDEF hypersonic missile interceptor has reached the final technical milestone of the program’s first phase.
This was reported by the international organization OCCAR, which manages joint defense programs among European countries.
At Diehl Defence facilities, the HYDEF program completed the Preliminary Requirements Review (PRR).
The successful completion of the PRR marks the end of the program’s technical and economic phase, as well as the early development stage for critical technologies and design solutions.
During this phase, the selected concept was fully defined. It encompassed technical solutions, development plans, physical and functional concepts, as well as the corresponding functional architecture.

The technology plan included a comprehensive assessment of the technology readiness level, identified key technical risks, and outlined further work aimed at creating a prototype of HYDEF interceptor’s physical components.
The feasibility of the relevant technologies was successfully confirmed through simulations, analysis, functional tests, and other validation methods.
The ‘European Hypersonic Defense Interceptor’ (HYDEF) project is a joint European initiative under the European Defense Fund (EDF).
The HYDEF brings together leading European organizations in the fields of defense, aerospace, and technology to develop and prototype innovative solutions for intercepting hypersonic targets.
“The project will result in a concept for a cost-effective intra-atmospheric interceptor capable of operating at various altitudes,” according to the project description.
The HYDEF is also expected to contribute to strengthening European strategic independence.
In 2023, it was reported that MBDA was developing the HYDIS2 hypersonic interceptor.
