Slovakia will not participate in EU military programs aimed at supporting Ukraine.
This was stated by Prime Minister Robert Fico, who emphasized that he will not allow the country’s funds to be used to finance Ukraine’s military spending.
Fico also criticized EU sanctions against Russia, calling them harmful to Europe itself.
His statement came after the EU summit, which reaffirmed support for Ukraine but did not agree on a funding mechanism.
EU leaders failed to agree on the use of frozen Russian assets to lend to Ukraine.
Slovakia stopped state military aid after the Fico government came to power in 2023.
Despite this, the country allows commercial arms sales to the Ukrainian side.
Fico believes that the conflict cannot be resolved on the battlefield, calling for political agreements.
Meanwhile, the EU plans to finance Ukraine’s needs for two years, but the mechanism remains undetermined.
Slovakia and Hungary, which are dependent on Russian energy, are concerned about the consequences of new US sanctions.
In early October, the Slovak government announced a military aid package for Ukraine.
At that time, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of Slovakia Robert Kaliniak took part in the 3rd International Defence Industries Forum (DFNC3) in Kyiv.
