Poland has received the first AH-64D Apache attack helicopters leased from the United States, the country’s Ministry of National Defense announced.
A formal handover ceremony took place on June 17 in Inowrocław, with Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz in attendance.
“Today, we are presenting a version that will be used mainly for training. The final version, the E model, will feature advanced systems for monitoring, detection, visualization, and data transmission across the entire battle group,” Kosiniak-Kamysz stated. “These helicopters will engage both aerial and ground targets, and transmit data to Abrams tanks and F-35s.”
Poland signed a $10 billion agreement with the U.S. on August 13, 2024, to purchase 96 AH-64E Apache Guardian helicopters, along with a logistics and training package.
Under a separate leasing arrangement, the U.S. supplies AH-64D helicopters to support Polish military training. The D-model Apaches will be used to develop operational capabilities until the delivery of the AH-64E variant.
The first leased helicopters will be deployed to the 1st Army Aviation Brigade, where Polish flight, technical, and support personnel—some of whom have already completed training in the U.S.—will begin local training.
The AH-64E is expected to expand Poland’s army aviation strike and reconnaissance capabilities. Once all units are delivered, Poland will become the second-largest Apache operator globally, after the United States.
In October 2024, the United States provided Poland with a $3.08 billion loan under the Foreign Military Financing (FMF) program to help fund the purchase.
Poland is scheduled to receive the first 15 AH-64Es in 2028, with deliveries set to be completed by 2032. In January, Warsaw signed a contract with General Electric to supply 210 T700-701D helicopter engines.
Poland signed several agreements to establish domestic capabilities for producing and maintaining AH-64E components ahead of the purchase. It will also be able to independently train maintenance crews and assess infrastructure requirements for the fleet.
