European NATO members and Canada will commit at the alliance’s summit, to be held next week in Ankara, to provide Ukraine with $80 billion in military aid over the 2026-2027 period.
This was reported by DW.
The draft NATO summit declaration, approved by all 32 alliance members, reaffirms an unwavering commitment to the principles of collective defense under Article 5 and outlines a package of military aid for Ukraine, signaling a temporary respite in the strained relations between the U.S. and the alliance.
The document does not provide for a clear mechanism for sharing the financial burden among allies. Furthermore, not all of the announced 70 billion euros constitutes new funding.
30 billion euros are being provided as part of the European Union’s lending program for Ukraine, while another 40 billion euros represent commitments agreed upon at the 2024 NATO summit in Washington.
If the allies also commit to maintaining the same level of funding in 2027, the total amount of aid specified in the declaration will increase to 140 billion euros.
In the draft statement, European allies commit to playing a more active role in defending the continent, specifically mentioning investments in deep-strike capabilities, air defense systems, and UAVs.
President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine will be represented at the NATO summit by a delegation he will lead himself.
