Jet-Powered Shahed Breaks Record Distance, Reaches Volyn for the First Time

Today, August 28, a Russian Shahed jet drone covered a record distance, about 960 km, before being shot down by Ukrainian air defense.

This was reported by the Telegram channel of OSINT analysts Air Defense Radar.

The drone, launched from a test site in Hvardiiske in occupied Crimea, flew as far as the village of Torchyna in the Volyn region.

Previously, there had been no recorded instances of a Shahed jet drone flying so far from its launch site.

OSINT analysts from Oko Gora also published an approximate flight path of the drone. According to this path, after being launched in Crimea, it may have flown over the territories of the Vinnytsia and Khmelnytskyi regions, then continued westward along the border with Moldova.

According to the PPO Radar monitoring channel, the drone was detected in Volyn at 5:34 a.m. on August 28 during a Russian attack.

The known range of the Geran-4 jet-powered UAV is approximately 850 km. According to analysts from Oko Gora, flying at an altitude of 5–7 km could allow such a drone to significantly increase its range.

However, flying at such an altitude has a significant drawback — the drone becomes much more detectable by radar systems.

It should be noted that the Geran-4 is a jet-powered version of the Russian strike UAV, which differs from the Geran-2 in its engine and higher flight speed. The first reported deployments took place in May 2026.

And although the Geran-5 has a claimed strike range of about 1,000 kilometers, such deep penetration into Ukrainian territory had not been recorded previously.

Torchyn, in the Volyn region, is located approximately 18 km from Lutsk and 60 km from the border with Poland. The H22 highway runs through Torchyn, leading to the Ustyluh border crossing on the Ukrainian-Polish border.
