A shipping route near Helsinki, Finland, has been closed after an unidentified object was spotted in the water.
Finnish newspaper HS reported on this.
Around 7:20 p.m., the Finnish Border Guard alerted police after finding an unknown object in the water south of Kustaanmiekka Island, near the Suomenlinna fortress.
Authorities described it as a cone-shaped metal object.
The object was found on the Helsinki–Tallinn shipping route, which is used by passenger vessels, including the Viking XPRS ferry. The ferry’s crew was the first to spot the object.
Police, together with the Finnish Gulf of Finland Coast Guard, cordoned off the area and called in the Finnish Navy to identify the object.
During the night of October 4, the Finnish Navy preliminarily identified the object as a very old mechanical part of a ship’s structure.
Police emphasized that the object does not pose an explosive threat.
The object is expected to be towed to the Santahamina naval base for further examination.
Although this incident was related to the discovery of shipwreck remains, Finnish law enforcement and military authorities continue to closely monitor Russia’s activities, which currently pose a threat to Finland.
Currently, the security services identify Russian spies and monitor the surface and underwater areas Russia uses to carry out acts of sabotage.
Militarnyi previously reported that Russia is expanding its military bases and strengthening its forces along the borders with the Nordic and Baltic countries. In particular, Russia is re-establishing a garrison in Petrozavodsk, near Finland. The newly formed 44th Army Corps is reportedly planned to be stationed there.
