Ukraine Receives NASAMS System and Air Defense Missiles from Partners — Zelensky

Ukraine has received a new NASAMS air defense missile system, along with a package of missiles, from the United States and Norway.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced this.

France and Germany have also provided additional missiles to bolster Ukraine’s air defense system.

“I am grateful to our American and Norwegian partners for the NASAMS system and the accompanying missiles. I am grateful to France and Germany for their recent support of our air defense system, specifically in the form of missiles,” Zelensky said.

NASAMS air defense system

The NASAMS air defense missile system consists of a fire control command post, an AN/MPQ-64 Sentinel radar station for detection and guidance, stationary or self-propelled launchers capable of carrying six missiles each, an optoelectronic surveillance system, and specialized loading and maintenance vehicles. The system uses air-to-air missiles adapted for launch from ground-based launchers.

The system’s primary weapon is the AIM-120 AMRAAM family of missiles, which, depending on the version, can intercept targets at ranges of up to 40 km. The system can also use AIM-9 Sidewinder short-range guided missiles and specialized AMRAAM-ER missiles with extended range.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces neutralize approximately 55% of jet-powered drones.
