Sweden is deploying a Patriot air defense missile system and 100 troops to Poland to reinforce NATO’s eastern flank.
They will defend a logistics hub in Rzeszów in the southeastern part of the country, which plays a key role in supplying military aid to Ukraine, according to the Swedish Armed Forces.
This will be the first time Swedish Patriot systems are deployed as part of an official NATO mission.
The system will be operated by personnel from the 6th Air Defense Regiment, supported by the 17th Blekinge Air Wing.
The Swedish contingent will operate under Alliance command and will be integrated into NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defense System.
The mission will begin in early December and last until the end of the year, with a planned extension through the first half of 2027.
The Swedish Armed Forces have four Patriot air defense missile system batteries in service, which are officially designated Luftvärnssystem 103 (LvS103) by the Swedish Army.
In total, under the contract, the country received 12 launchers, AN/MPQ-65 radars, and related equipment.
Sweden uses the modern Patriot Configuration-3+, which is equipped with two types of missiles: the PAC-2 GEM-T (Guidance Enhanced Missile-Tactical) and the PAC-3 MSE (Missile Segment Enhancement) interceptors.
All of these are in service with the 6th Air Defense Regiment, headquartered in Halmstad.
Sweden will deploy its JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets to Poland to reinforce NATO’s eastern flank.
The fighter jets will primarily be based at and operate from airfields in Sweden, while a small forward detachment will be stationed in Poland to provide technical and operational support for the flights.
