The new German government is exploring how Germany can support the production of long-range weapons by the Ukrainian defense industry.
Spiegel reported on this.
“Publicly, the new German government no longer wants to speak as specifically about aid packages as before. However, behind the scenes, planners are preparing, for example, how Germany can support the Ukrainian defense industry in producing long-range weapons,” the media stated.
It is likely that the issue, including the continuation of military aid to Ukraine, will be discussed during the visit of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was invited by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, on Wednesday, May 28.
Although details of possible support have not been disclosed, if confirmed, Germany will not be the first country to finance Ukraine’s long-range weapons.
Lithuania was the first to join the funding of long-range weapons. In early September 2024, it was announced that €10 million would be allocated to produce the Palianytsia missile drone.
Later, at the end of September, Ukraine’s Defense Minister Rustem Umierov reported that Ukraine had received verbal consent from Western partners to finance a missile program developed by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
In November 2024, Ukraine and Denmark signed a series of implementation agreements under the Danish model to purchase Ukrainian-made weapons for the Ukrainian army, totaling $629 million. Thanks to these funds, by the end of 2024, the Ukrainian Defense Forces were able to purchase long-range drones, anti-tank missile systems, missiles, and self-propelled artillery systems produced in Ukraine.
Additionally, in November 2024, it was announced that the Swedish government would finance the production of Ukrainian long-range drones and Ukrainian long-range missiles as part of military aid.
At the end of May 2025, the Swedish government announced, as part of a new aid package, the allocation of SEK 1 billion (€92.3 million) for procuring air defense systems and long-range drones.
In November 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine plans to produce at least 30,000 long-range drones and 3,000 cruise missiles and missile drones throughout 2025.
Overall, according to the President, the Ukrainian defense industry produced more than one hundred units of missile weapons during 2024.
