Saab and France’s Directorate General of Armaments (DGA) have signed a letter of intent to purchase GlobalEye’s early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft.
According to Saab’s press release, the agreement includes the planned purchase of two aircraft, with an option for two more.
It also covers a complete support package, including ground equipment, crew training, and technical assistance.
A firm contract is expected in the coming months. No delivery timeline or purchase price has been disclosed.
The move marks a shift by the French Air and Space Force toward European-made strategic assets.
France currently operates four U.S.-made Boeing E-3F Sentry aircraft, delivered in the early 1990s. These aircraft have become increasingly difficult to maintain due to aging airframes and outdated systems.
French defense media have reported on the government’s intention to replace the E-3 fleet since early 2024.
The GlobalEye platform is based on the Bombardier Global 6000/6500 business jet and is equipped with the Erieye ER radar, which uses an active electronically scanned array (AESA) in the S-band.
Built using gallium nitride (GaN) components, the radar offers improved energy efficiency, resistance to jamming, and up to 70% greater range compared to earlier systems. Saab claims a detection range of more than 650 kilometers, which can be extended by sector focusing.
In addition to the Erieye ER, the GlobalEye carries a Seaspray 7500E maritime surveillance radar capable of detecting surface and ground targets in poor weather. An electro-optical/infrared sensor mounted under the nose provides additional targeting and surveillance capabilities.
The system integrates both active and passive sensors to provide real-time situational awareness across air, land, and sea domains.
