Belarus’s self-proclaimed president, Alexander Lukashenko, has announced the continuation of preparations by the country’s Armed Forces for a possible war.
The Russian Kommersant newspaper reported this news.
According to Lukashenko, to maintain combat readiness, the Belarusian army will conduct a selective mobilization of certain units.
A large-scale snap combat readiness inspection in the Belarusian army began on January 16 on the orders of the self-proclaimed head of state.
On January 26, Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin announced an inspection of the combat readiness of formations and military units, and on March 13, Secretary of the Security Council of the Republic, Alexander Volfovich, announced the completion of these measures.
“Next, as I promised, we will selectively mobilize units in order to prepare them for war,” Lukashenko stated during a meeting with Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin.
On April 17, it was reported that, according to Ukrainian intelligence, roads were being built in the border regions of Belarus toward the Ukrainian border, and artillery positions were being established.
On the same day, Lukashenko signed a decree on the conscription of reserve officers for military service in 2026; however, this is not an exceptional measure, as similar conscriptions are conducted annually in Belarus as part of routine training.
In early May, it became known that Ukraine’s airspace was violated by a balloon equipped with a relay station for drones, which entered from Belarusian territory.
