Poland plans to start developing its own anti-drone system without waiting for the implementation of the European Union’s “drone wall” initiative.
Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk stated this in an interview with Bloomberg.
The system is intended to counter threats from Russia, particularly its drones, which periodically violate the country’s borders.
According to the Polish official, this month, the Ministry of Defense will announce investments in technologies for detecting, jamming, and neutralizing enemy drones as part of a broader air defense program.
Meanwhile, Polish companies are expected to receive at least half of the contracts.
“We agree with the idea of strengthening the defense of the skies over the entire European Union and are ready to consider external proposals or solutions. But we give priority to national projects,” Tomczyk said.
He noted that the EU’s “drone wall” could complement the Polish system in the future.
The Polish Ministry of Defense plans to use the EU’s new defensive credit program SAFE to finance the country’s drone shield. The country gained access to €43.7 billion in funding under this initiative.
The government wants the first new capabilities to be put into operation within three months of the announcement, and for the entire counter-drone system to be completed within two years.
“Weapons against drones must be comprehensive. They should consist of different sensors and interceptors operating simultaneously – first detecting and identifying objects, and then neutralizing them,” Tomczyk noted.
He added that the new anti-drone initiatives will become “another layer” of the country’s air defense, alongside already deployed long- and medium-range systems.
All these elements are designed to protect against a wide range of aerial threats, including aircraft, helicopters, drones, and cruise missiles.
