Russia sent a cargo ship to resupply an airbase in Syria, a move that may signal the Kremlin’s intention to maintain its military presence in the country following the change in government.

According to The Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. officials and satellite imagery analysis, the cargo vessel Sparta departed from Saint Petersburg in March and arrived at the Syrian port of Tartus in May.

The vessel was escorted by Russian Navy ships for most of its journey. It was carrying cargo intended to replenish supplies at the Khmeimim Air Base.

According to the U.S. newspaper, this is the first documented mission to resupply Russian military facilities in Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in late 2024.

In mid-May, OSINT projects InsiderGeo and SONARROW_OSINT reported that the Russian cargo ship Sparta had arrived at the Syrian port of Tartus under the escort of Russian warships.

Satellite imagery also captured the frigate Admiral Flota Kasatonov alongside the cargo vessel, escorting the transport ship. Ahead of the convoy’s arrival, the corvette Stoykiy departed from Tartus to help secure a safe passage corridor.

The convoy took strict security measures. After passing Gibraltar, all ships turned off their transponders, and at least two vessels transmitted false location data, pretending to be in the Baltic Sea.

Following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, Moscow has continued efforts to secure an agreement with Syria’s new leadership that would allow Russia to maintain a military presence in the country. Reports in October 2025 indicated that Russian military aircraft had resumed flights to Syria.

On April 1, 2026, Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa said in London that the former Russian bases are expected to be transformed into training centers for the Syrian military.

He stated that only two major Russian facilities remain operational in Syria, Tartus and Khmeimim, out of the dozens once maintained by Moscow. According to al-Sharaa, the Syrian government is working to repurpose both sites for its own armed forces.

Under Assad’s rule, Russia relied heavily on the Khmeimim Air Base and the port of Tartus as key logistical and military hubs supporting operations across the Middle East and Africa.
