U.S. Signs $76.6B Deal for 14 Columbia- and Virginia-Class Submarines

The Pentagon has awarded contracts worth $76.6 billion for the construction of submarines, according to the U.S. Navy.

The contracts include the construction of five Columbia-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs).

The contracts also provide for the construction of nine Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs) during fiscal years 2025–2029.

The submarines will be built jointly by General Dynamics Electric Boat and HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding.

The Columbia-class submarines will replace the Navy’s aging nuclear deterrent fleet, ensuring the continuity of the United States’ sea-based strategic nuclear deterrent. The Virginia-class submarines will further expand the Navy’s undersea strike capabilities.

The U.S. Navy has now contracted seven Columbia-class submarines. It has also commissioned 26 Virginia-class submarines, with 23 more planned for construction.
