The United Kingdom still lacks a clear delivery plan to fulfill its primary commitment to build up to 7,000 new long-range missiles. The document, which was supposed to outline the financing details and production phases for the weapons, remains unpublished a year after the initiative was announced.
This was reported by UK Defence Journal, which highlighted a recent written response from government officials in Parliament. Conservative MP Ben Obis-Jakti inquired about progress in fulfilling the promise.
In response, Minister of State for Defence Luke Pollard was unable to specify the number of orders placed or weapons manufactured, but merely referred to the upcoming Defence Investment Plan.
The commitment regarding 7,000 missiles, announced in June 2025, was initially positioned as an ambitious goal rather than a program with a detailed budget and timeline.
It is the Defence Investment Plan, which will replace the former Equipment Plan, that is intended to convert intentions into funded and time-bound contracts. Until its release, there is no approved framework in the country against which real progress could be officially reported.
The government has also not specified the list of weapons that will be included in the stated quantity. The program is expected to cover a wide range of munitions: from cruise missiles to new long-range systems being developed jointly with Germany.
The large-scale weapons development program was announced in conjunction with investments totaling £6 billion and the construction of at least six new munitions factories.
