Amid the Russian sabotage attempt in Leipzig, Germany is strengthening its cooperation with Ukraine and plans to expand its troop deployment in Lithuania.
This was reported by Bild and Delfi.
Germany’s response was prompted by an incident on August 4 at the Leipzig airfield, where an FPV drone carrying explosives crashed near a Ukrainian An-124 Ruslan aircraft.
Debris from two other UAVs, the explosive hexogen, and SIM cards were found nearby, leading investigators to saboteurs linked to Russian intelligence services.
The Leipzig airfield is a strategic NATO hub for the transport of military equipment, so the drone incursions were viewed as a direct threat to the Alliance’s critical infrastructure.
In response, Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s team is considering providing Ukraine with intelligence from the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), including precise coordinates of targets for retaliatory strikes on Russian territory.
Germany and Ukraine are finalizing a new bilateral agreement on the joint production and use of UAVs, which is intended to strengthen both countries’ protection against aerial threats.
In addition, Germany is closing the Russian Consulate General in Bonn and the Russian House in Berlin.
At the same time, Germany is significantly reinforcing the 45th Armored Brigade, already stationed on NATO’s eastern flank, by increasing its strength to approximately 5,000 military personnel and civilian staff.
The brigade is being reinforced with equipment, bringing the total to 2,000 units, including heavy armor, air defense systems, and reconnaissance systems.
German forces are stationed at bases in Rukla and Pabrade, 30 km from the border, which allows them to engage in combat from the very first minute of a potential conflict.
Miltarnyi previously informed that Ukraine will share its experience with Germany on countering Russian drones and protecting critical infrastructure.
