Russian troops attempted to use a homemade vehicle to break through in Vovchansk, but the convoy was destroyed by Ukrainian drone operators and artillerymen before it even reached the water obstacle.
The strike was reported by the Vovkodavy unit of the 2nd Motorized Infantry Battalion of the 57th Motorized Brigade, which published a video of its operators in action.
The footage shows an unusual vehicle based on a truck with a trailer, which Russian troops had equipped with additional metal components. In the video itself, the vehicle was named ‘MAD IVAN,’ drawing an analogy to Mad Max (ed.: a post-apocalyptic action film directed by George Miller, 1979).
The drone accompanied the vehicle as it moved through the ruined streets of Vovchansk, recording the route and preparations for further actions.
After the vehicle emerged into an open area, Ukrainian FPV drones began targeting it, delivering successive strikes on the vehicle and trailer.
The strikes were carried out by UAV operators in coordination with artillery units of the 57th Motorized Brigade and friendly units of the Defense Forces.
After the first hits, the vehicle continued moving but sustained additional strikes that ultimately rendered it incapable of completing its mission.
The video also captures the detonation and fire that occurred after the vehicle was struck. Thick smoke subsequently rose above the impact site.
Ukrainian military officials note that Russian units are increasingly using improvised equipment created from available civilian or cargo platforms in an attempt to compensate for the loss of standard engineering assets.
However, these solutions are still vulnerable to aerial reconnaissance. The large size of these structures makes them easy targets for drones.
Earlier, Militarnyi reported that Russian troops are increasingly using motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), and other light vehicles for assault operations in an attempt to reduce losses of armored vehicles to Ukrainian drones.
