The Colombian government stated that the United States mistakenly struck a fishing boat in the country’s territorial waters.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro made this statement.
“U.S. government officials committed murder and violated our sovereignty in territorial waters,” Petro wrote in a post.
According to him, the deceased fisherman, Alejandro Carranza, had no connection to drug trafficking and was engaged solely in fishing.
Before the strike, the vessel was reportedly adrift and transmitting a distress signal due to an engine failure.
The President noted that Colombia expects official explanations from Washington.
At the same time, the government has not yet provided evidence confirming that the vessel was a fishing boat or that it was within Colombian territorial waters.
Observers, therefore, do not rule out that the statement may be part of domestic political maneuvering or an attempt to increase pressure on the United States.
It was recently reported that the U.S. military destroyed a drug submarine heading for the mainland.
In early October, Washington announced the destruction of four drug smuggling vessels in the Caribbean region as part of a new, tougher strategy to counter cartels and smugglers.
Under this strategy, drug cartels are now officially classified as “terrorist organizations.”
