Israel Blocked Transfer of U.S. Iron Dome Systems to Ukraine Over Fears of Technology Leaks to Iran

Israel blocked the transfer of U.S. Iron Dome air defense batteries to Ukraine, a move that drew criticism in the United States.

Senator Lindsey Graham was the driving force behind the transfer of the systems in 2023, according to The Washington Post.

Although these batteries were purchased and maintained with American taxpayer funds, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vetoed the decision.

The Israeli side justified blocking the transfer of the system by citing concerns that the classified technology could allegedly fall into Iran’s hands.

Instead of the Iron Dome systems, Israel returned the Patriot batteries to the United States, which were subsequently redirected to support Ukraine’s air defense needs.

Now, the U.S. House of Representatives is considering a bill to further integrate the two countries’ defense industries, which risks exacerbating this problem.

Critics of the initiative fear that its passage would grant Israel a veto over the use and transfer of other American weapons to third countries.

The new legislative proposal calls for expanding joint research and development in the fields of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, biotechnology, and unmanned systems.

The bill has already passed the House of Representatives as part of the $1.15 trillion defense budget and has the support of the Israeli lobby AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee).

Meanwhile, a group of Democrats and Republicans in the Senate is attempting to block the bill, viewing it as a threat to American sovereignty.

Debates over expanding defense cooperation with Israel will continue during Senate hearings and may drag on until the fall.

As a reminder, former British Defence Minister Ben Wallace stated that the Israeli government refused to provide aid to Ukraine, promising not to jeopardize its relations with Russia.
