Romania exposes paramilitary organization that was plotting the country’s withdrawal from NATO

Six people have been arrested in Romania on charges of treason. They are accused of having ties to Russian agents.

Romanian media reported on this with reference to the prosecutor’s office.

On Wednesday, March 5, the Office for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism detained six people on charges of treason. One of the detainees is Radu Teodoru, a 101-year-old retired Romanian general known for his strongly anti-Semitic publications.

The prosecutor’s office accuses him of high treason and the creation of a criminal group that planned to “violate the sovereignty and independence of the Romanian state by undermining the country’s ability to defend itself” since 2023.

Their goal was to withdraw Romania from NATO, eliminate the current constitutional order and political parties, take over the government, introduce a new constitution, and change the country’s name and flag, the statement said.

The organized criminal group acted under the guise of an organization and was structured according to a military hierarchy with echelons of leadership (general staff) and operational personnel.

The Russian trail

According to the prosecutor’s office, the suspects repeatedly had contact with agents of foreign states both in Romania and in the Russian Federation, according to a statement from the special unit of the prosecutor’s office responsible for organized crime.

The two suspects traveled to Moscow in January of this year and met with people who were ready to support the group’s seizure of power in Romania, according to the intelligence services.

According to the SRI intelligence service, the suspects also formed a paramilitary group to destabilize the constitutional order in the country. Members of this group “actively sought support from the staff of the Russian Embassy in Bucharest.”

Militarnyi previously reported that a Colombian citizen who planned to organize explosions on the instructions of Russian agents will be tried in Romania.

Officers of the Romanian Office for Combating Organized Crime and Terrorism detained a 34-year-old Colombian on suspicion of planning to commit sabotage at the country’s facilities.

He is currently in custody, and his case was transferred to the Bucharest Court of Appeal on November 13. He faces 10 to 20 years in prison on the charges.
