The Norwegian Armed Forces have launched their own drone program, under which they will spend 1.5 billion kroner (130 million euros) on testing domestic drones over the next 10 years.

This is reported by NRK.

The Norwegian Armed Forces have tested FPV drones assembled in Norway near the center of Kongsberg, which will become “an important part of the country’s defense in the coming years.” A total of 100 such FPV drones will be tested this winter.

“They are getting better and more resistant to weather conditions and countermeasures, so we really need to keep up the pace. I am quite confident that drones will be decisive in the future,” said Sigurd Løvland Harsheim, a lieutenant colonel in the Army.

The Norwegian attack drones are manufactured by Rift Dynamics, while the warhead was developed by Nammo, a company specializing in the production of munitions.

Defense Minister Tore Onshuus Sandvik said that the Norwegian drone initiative is part of an international program that includes cooperation with Ukrainian forces. He noted that the military learns from Ukrainians every day, and added that Norway hosts Ukrainian drone instructors.

“We learn from their experience in using drones, so it’s a win-win. We are contributing to the fight for their sovereignty, while at the same time we are gaining the necessary knowledge in return,” the minister said.

Chief of the Army Lars Lerwick says that the increased use of drones will increase the safety of Norwegian soldiers. According to him, the Norwegian Armed Forces are close to demonstrating the first Norwegian “swarm” drones.

“We will hand over the swarms of drones to the ground forces next week. This will increase our operational capability. We will reduce the risk to our soldiers, gain more firepower and improve our ability to find enemy targets,” he said.

As a reminder, in March 2025, the Norwegian company Nammo, one of the leading manufacturers of artillery ammunition, and the Ukrainian defense company signed a strategic cooperation agreement.

Earlier, at the end of August 2024, it became known that Ukraine would launch the production of 155-mm shells using NAMMO technology.

The Norwegian government has allocated funding under the Nansen program, which has enabled the company to transfer technology and experience to an unnamed Ukrainian partner.
