The Dutch Ministry of Defence has launched a search for a new armored personnel carrier (APC) for its mechanized brigade, Shephard Media reports.

The initiative is part of a broader modernization program aimed at improving the mobility and firepower of the Dutch Army.

Key requirements include selecting a Military Off-The-Shelf (MOTS) platform that is already familiar to the Dutch Armed Forces.

According to the announced specifications, the CV90 and ACSV G5 are the main contenders. Serial production is expected to begin in 2027 or 2028, with 45 vehicles scheduled for delivery in 2029 and another 50 in 2030.

If the full order of 150 vehicles is approved, the final batch of 50 would be delivered in 2031.

The new APCs will replace aging models in service and be equipped with modern weapons, communication systems and protective features. They will also meet NATO standards and be designed to ensure high maneuverability and crew protection in modern combat conditions.

Given the criteria, the Dutch military is considering two platforms: the CV90, already in use with the 43rd Mechanized Brigade, and the ACSV G5, built by FFG and currently being acquired to support Dutch air defense capabilities.

The contract is expected to be signed in late 2025 or early 2026. If the timeline holds, the first prototype could be delivered as early as 2026.

The CV90’s widespread use offers advantages in terms of production scale, logistics, and spare parts supply. In comparison, the ACSV G5 has more limited deployment, being operated only by the Netherlands and Norway.

However, ACSV G5 was designed from the outset as a multi-role support vehicle, while CV90 is primarily an infantry fighting vehicle.

Opting for CV90 would likely reduce procurement and training costs, as it is already in active service. ACSV G5, while ordered, has not yet been delivered.

The estimated cost per platform is $3.5 million, with the overall program budget around $650 million. About 20% of that is allocated to procurement and training.
