Germany Signs €240M Deal With Planet Labs for Satellite Monitoring; Observers Suggest Ukraine may Benefit
News

Germany has signed a multi-year contract with Planet Labs for satellite monitoring over selected European regions, likely to support Ukraine’s defense capabilities, according to German defense outlet Hartpunkt.

The agreement, valued at €240 million, aims to “support peace and security in Europe” by providing high-resolution satellite imagery and near-real-time intelligence. Under the deal, Germany will gain dedicated access to Planet Labs’ Pelican satellite network and receive data from PlanetScope and SkySat systems, along with AI-driven tools for enhanced situational and maritime awareness.

The U.S.-based aerospace company gained wide recognition for its satellite imagery related to the war in Ukraine. With a network of over 600 Earth observation satellites and a flexible deployment model, Planet Labs can rapidly respond to clients’ critical intelligence needs.

Observers believe Germany’s growing intelligence-gathering efforts are focused on areas tied to the conflict in Ukraine. Researcher DeAidUA, who tracks German military assistance to Ukraine, noted:

“Although Ukraine is not mentioned explicitly, the press release frames this as supporting European peace and security. Since May 2025, most German military aid has been kept confidential, and companies have largely refrained from public statements about contracts supporting Ukraine. I believe this could involve direct support to Ukraine.”

Supporting this assumption is another recent seven-figure agreement between Planet Labs and NATO, which aims to provide alliance members, including Germany, with daily monitoring and intelligence over strategically important regions. That contract includes similar capabilities, such as access to PlanetScope data and advanced AI-powered analysis tools.

While Planet Labs’ satellites operate in the visible spectrum and are limited at night or under heavy cloud cover, Germany has long supported Ukraine with radar-based satellite intelligence. These Synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) satellites provide all-weather, day-and-night imaging, capable of detecting radar-reflective targets such as ships, buildings, and armored vehicles.

Germany previously helped secure SAR data for Ukraine via a contract backed by the German government between Rheinmetall and Ukrainian defense institutions.
