The American defense company General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems, together with the U.S. Army, has opened a new facility for the production of 155mm artillery ammunition.

This was reported on the official U.S. Army website.

The facility specializes in filling shells with explosives, assembling them, and packaging, which is expected to significantly accelerate the production rate of these munitions in the U.S.

The new manufacturing facilities are located in Camden, Arkansas, where additional facilities are also expected to be launched to further increase the production rate of shells.

As noted by the Pentagon, the two new filling and assembly lines will be capable of producing up to 50,000 shells per month once they achieve full operational readiness.

This facility is part of the U.S. Army’s coordinated efforts to increase the monthly production of 155mm artillery shells to 100,000 units.

Since 2022, the U.S. Army has nearly quadrupled its monthly production of this critically important ammunition through efforts to enhance defense readiness, respond to global challenges, and apply lessons learned from current armed conflicts.

The new facility is designed to modernize the Army’s industrial base to 21st-century standards by implementing new technologies, advanced automation, and digital quality tracking, thereby enhancing stability and productivity.

“Today is the result of strong partnerships between industry, local, state, and federal government colleagues,” Patrick Mason, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army, stated.

The facility is also equipped with an innovative air cooling system for hardening explosives, which significantly reduces water consumption compared to traditional cooling methods.

Militarnyi previously reported that the newly established U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) plans to cut approximately 1,000 jobs at one of the country’s largest ammunition plants.

The McAlester Army Ammunition Plant (MCAAP), which the U.S. Department of Defense operates, is the largest ammunition depot in the United States.
