France’s internal security service has rejected services from the U.S. company Palantir in favor of a domestic firm, aiming to strengthen digital autonomy.
The General Directorate for Internal Security of France (DGSI) has chosen the French company ChapsVision.
Ahead of the opening of the country’s largest technology conference, VivaTech, France’s Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu published a video on X, stating that the decision was made to avoid relying on the goodwill of individual partners.
“We must use our own artificial intelligence models; we cannot accept new strategic dependencies in the digital sphere,” he said.
Speaking about the importance of artificial intelligence, Lecornu noted that “the time for experiments is over.”
Palantir’s main clients, especially in the United States, are government agencies, intelligence services, and large corporations.
DGSI has been cooperating with Palantir since 2016 and extended its contract for another three years in December.
Marc Henrichmann, the head of the parliamentary commission overseeing intelligence services in Germany, also announced plans to replace Palantir with a “European alternative.”
Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) has selected the French company ChapsVision and its ArgonOS software.
Palantir was founded by Peter Thiel, a Silicon Valley billionaire. The company was established with support from the CIA.
Palantir has significant experience in developing artificial intelligence systems for large-scale data processing and specialized analytical tasks.
In 2023, Palantir and Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation announced a partnership to use the company’s technologies to support Ukraine’s defense.
